GUY AND LUKE CALL IT A DAY
We would like to say a massive thank you to two North’s Senior referees who have announced their retirement from refereeing in 2022. Sadly, Guy Richards and Luke Joseph have both made the decision to hang up their whistles after many years officiating.
Guy Richards had an incredible 17-year refereeing career. Guy had a very successful junior refereeing career, excelling and earning his position as a WNBL official, where he refereed for 6 years, was selected to referee the WNBL finals series 5 times and the WNBL grand finals series 2 times. Guy earned his FIBA license in 2019 and was given opportunities to referee at many international tournaments. Guy has always shown true determination to excel and has been an incredible role model for many officials throughout his career and will be dearly missed. We thank him for everything he has done and how much he has contributed to the game at Norths and to the Australian basketball community.
Luke’s journey in refereeing began after an injury lead him to become a referee, instead of playing. Luke progressed through and then attended many Australian Junior Championships where he excelled each time. From this Luke began refereeing Waratah League and after many years on here, Luke was selected to be on the WNBL Panel where he refereed for 3 years. Luke capped of an incredible inaugural NBL1 season this year by being appointed to the NBL1 Women Semi Final and Grand Final and then being selected to attend the NBL1 National Finals in Melbourne. This was a fantastic end to a brilliant career for Luke. While he will still be around as the GSC on a Wednesday night, we will miss him on court. His excitement and willingness to help others will be something many people have learnt from him and will carry them going forward. He will be missed, and we thank him for all his time and effort he put towards the game of basketball.
Again, we would like to recognize everything Guy and Luke have contributed to Norths and the wider basketball community over the years and wish them all the best in their retirement.
